Gustavo Gatica and his YouTube channel to report on the trial against Claudio Crespo

This Friday, August 9, the oral trial preparation hearing began against former police officer Claudio Crespo, accused of shooting Gustavo Gatica in the face during the social unrest of 2019, resulting in the total loss of his sight.

To document and share all the details of the judicial process, Gatica has launched his own YouTube channel, titled “GustavoGatica2024”, which aims to keep the public informed.

The young psychologist, who has become a symbol of the repression suffered during the protests in Chile, explained in an interview with Radio USACH that the creation of this channel is a way of making visible a judicial process that he considers symbolic, “not only because of the seriousness of what happened.”

The channel offers an unpublished interview with Gustavo, in which he shares his life from childhood to the tragic event of November 8, 2019, when he was hit by pellets in both eyes while participating in a demonstration in Plaza Italia. According to Radio USACH, a podcast will be launched in the coming days where Gatica will talk with guests from various fields, including the lawyer and former prosecutor Carlos Gajardo, who will be the first guest.

The trial, which is taking place in the Seventh Guarantee Court of Santiago, began with Crespo’s defense requesting a precautionary measure, alleging irregularities in the signing of police documents, which was rejected by Judge Freddy Cubillos, as detailed by Radio UChile. The Metropolitan North Complexity Prosecutor’s Office has requested a 12-year prison sentence for Crespo, charging him with crimes of unlawful coercion resulting in very serious injuries.

Gustavo Gatica has expressed that this trial not only seeks justice for what happened to him, but is also a call for “no one ever again in our country, whatever they think, to lose their sight for going to protest,” as he published. The Disconcert.

Through his YouTube channel, he invites citizens to follow the process and join in a network of love and justice. /

This YouTube channel is not only a space for information, but also a platform for meeting and reflection on human rights and the search for justice in Chile, as highlighted by Radio USACH.
