Gustav Svensson chooses to end his national team career. This is confirmed by the 34-year-old inner midfielder on the Swedish Football Association’s website on Saturday.
– Being able to represent Sweden has been an incredible honor. I’m grateful to have had that opportunity and all the friends I’ve made along the way. I would like to extend an extra big thank you to all fellow players, fans and leaders for great years, says Svensson to SvFF’s website.
Svensson made his A national team debut already in January 2009 and has been noted for a total of 32 A national matches over the years. He was part of the squad in both the WC 2018 and the EC 2021.
– Gustav has been with us for a long time and has always been incredibly professional even though he has not always played that much. He has always been ready and always done his best in training as a match. Wish Gustav great luck in the future, says national team captain Janne Andersson in a comment.
Svensson will thus be the fifth national team player to choose to end his national team career after this summer’s European Championships. Marcus Berg, Mikael Lustig, Sebastian Larsson and Andreas Granqvist have already thanked each other. The latter even ends his playing career altogether.
– It is a bunch of guys who have made great efforts for us both on and off the field. A generation of players who have taken great responsibility when it comes to setting a high level in everything we do as a national team. They should all feel very proud of the great efforts of the men’s national team for a long time. A bunch of super professionals quite simply, says Janne Andersson on SvFF’s website.
Gustav Svensson has recently been stated to be relevant for a return to IFK Gothenburg, where Jakob Johansson and Pontus Wernbloom recently put their shoes on the shelf.
