Gus Schumacher, 23, hit home with a bang.
The American doldis defeated all the Norwegians and won.
– It is hard to understand, says Schumacher.
The World Cup in cross-country skiing has come to Minneapolis and then an American took the opportunity to strike with the biggest bang of the season.
Gus Schumacher had never finished better than eighth in a distance race in the World Cup (over three years ago) but on Sunday he suddenly won.
Schumacher defeated all the Norwegians and William Poromaa who became the best Swede in the individual 10-kilometer freestyle race.

In tears after the victory
Schumacher was the first American men’s skier to win a World Cup distance race in 40 years. The latest to do the same was the pioneer Bill Koch who developed the freestyle technique.
– Oh my God. It’s hard to believe, says Schumacher in the victory interview at the stadium.
He has a hard time holding back the tears as he continues.
– I am so grateful for the whole team and for everyone who is here. It feels like it represents something big for our team. I love doing it together with them and I hope this is the first victory of many.
Schumacher was carried forward by the home crowd.
– I couldn’t feel my body but I knew I could go faster. I didn’t know I was going to win this race but I did everything I could as always and everything just worked out perfectly, he says.
