Dominic Thiem’s ex-coach Günter Bresnik sees men’s tennis soaring. “How many people are still talking about Federer now?” He considers the call from the women’s scene for the same amount of prize money to be unnecessary. A conversation about Thiem, Returns, mental training and “Big Points”: “When someone talks about it, I get crazy.”
Mr. Bresnik, the French Open is coming up. In the absence of 14-time champion Rafael Nadal, the winner is exceptionally not yet known in advance. So who wins in Paris?
Gunter Bresnik: If I had to bet, I would put my money on Carlos Alcaraz. Why? Because he has already won a Grand Slam tournament and is prepared for “Best of Five” tennis. His first challenger is Novak Djoković, although he has had a disastrous clay-court season so far. But you must never write it off at a Grand Slam. Behind Alcaraz and Djoković, Holger Rune is the most suspect. And otherwise? Daniil Medvedev won Rome. Tsitsipas always plays well in Paris. Who will win the tournament this year is more open than it has been for a long time.
The “Big Three” have outshined everything for 20 years. Roger Federer has now ended his career, Nadal at least this season. And Djoković has mutated into a part-time worker due to injuries and a lack of vaccination. Are these all-time greats missing from tennis – or have the Alcaraz, Runes and Sinners filled the vacuum long ago?
