Armed militants have killed at least 45 people in northwestern Nigeria. Residents of the city of Faru have told Reuters news agency. It is unknown who is behind the attack.
“The armed bandits stormed Faru on more than a hundred motorcycles. They fired at people at random,” said a resident of the city.
A hospital worker says security forces and local vigilantes brought in dozens of bodies. At least eleven were also injured.
Boarding school
Raids, murders and mass kidnappings for ransom, especially of schoolchildren, are a regular occurrence in northwestern Nigeria. Sunday night an estimated 150 students from a Christian boarding school were still kidnapped after an armed group of men overpowered security guards.
The violence in the region has raised concerns as extremist groups such as Boko Haram and the West African branch of Islamic State are gaining ground. They can take advantage of the lack of good governance and thus fuel uprisings.
