Gunman on Scooter Unleashes Random Shooting Spree in New York City, Leaving One Dead and Three Injured

Gunman on Scooter Goes on Shooting Spree in New York City, Killing One and Injuring Three

A gunman riding a scooter opened fire in multiple neighborhoods in New York City, seemingly at random, killing one man and injuring three others, according to police. The male suspect was taken into custody by police in Queens around 1 p.m., and authorities have recovered a 9mm handgun with an extended clip.

The shooting spree began at around 11 a.m. in Cypress Hills, at the intersection of Ashford Street and Arlington Avenue. A 21-year-old man who was walking at the time was shot once in the shoulder. He was transported to Brookdale Hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries, as confirmed by the police.

NYPD Assistant Chief Joseph Kenny stated at an afternoon press conference that detectives from the 75th precinct responded to the scene and discovered video footage showing a male Hispanic approaching the victim from behind on a scooter. The suspect raised his hands once and fired a single shot, striking the victim.

Shortly after, at around 11:30 a.m., an 86-year-old man was walking on Jamaica Avenue near 108th Street when he was shot multiple times in the back. He was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center but was pronounced dead, according to the police.

Another round of shots was fired nearby, narrowly missing a group of people standing outside, as explained by Assistant Chief Kenny. Numerous witnesses described the gunman on a scooter randomly firing at the group on the corner of 108th Street and Jamaica Avenue.

At approximately 11:35 a.m., the suspect shot a 44-year-old man in the face at the intersection of 126th Street and Hillside Avenue on the Kew Gardens-Richmond Hill border. The bullet struck the man in his cheek, leaving him in critical condition, according to Kenny.

Minutes later, the suspect shot a 63-year-old man in the shoulder at the intersection of 134th Street and Jamaica Avenue. The victim was transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect’s apprehension was aided by the NYPD’s domain awareness system, which sent an alert with the suspect’s description to every police officer across the city. The system requires officers to acknowledge the alert in order for their phone to stop sounding. Two officers who saw the alert recognized the suspect and arrested him on the corner of Sutphin Boulevard and 94th Avenue in Queens.

During the media briefing, police revealed that the suspect is a 25-year-old with at least one prior arrest in the city. The motive behind the suspect’s daytime rampage across multiple boroughs is not yet clear. NYPD officials stated that footage obtained in the hours immediately following the shooting appears to show the suspect randomly shooting.

“At this time, we don’t know the motive. It seems that his acts were random. If you look at the demographics and pedigree of the victims, they’re all different at this time,” said Assistant Chief Kenny.

Mayor Eric Adams has been briefed on the shooting and plans to meet with the families of the injured men, according to sources. The investigation into the incident is ongoing as authorities work to determine the motive behind the gunman’s actions.
