(CNN) — A man entered a Walmart distribution center in California and began shooting at random targets, killing one person and later officers fatally shot him during an exchange of fire, authorities reported.
The shooter was identified as Louis Lane, 31, according to Tehama County Sheriff Phil Johnston.
After the shooting at the Red Bluff facility, he clashed with officers in the parking lot, where they traded around 20-30 rounds, Johnston said. Police added that he used a semi-automatic rifle.
Police shot him and pronounced him dead at a local hospital, the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office said.
The victim was Walmart employee Martin Haro-Lozano. He was transferred to the hospital by a sheriff on duty due to the extent of his injuries but later died, authorities said. It is unknown so far if he has any relationship with the shooter.
Lane worked in the center of the Red Bluff area in February 2019, but was fired from his job for not showing up on duty, authorities said.
Another victim was hit by the killer’s car when he entered the building and remains in the hospital. Johnston confirmed that a total of six people had been transported from the scene of the attack to local hospitals with minor to moderate injuries.
He drove first through the parking lot
Dispatchers received multiple calls Saturday afternoon from the distribution center reporting that there was an active shooter and multiple shots fired.
The shooter drove through the parking lot four times before colliding his vehicle into the lobby area of the building, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
When he hit the building and the car caught fire, he got out of the vehicle and started shooting randomly at the facility and through the parking area.
