Manchester: Ilkay Gündogan, the German national football team’s recently retired player, is returning to English champions Manchester City after just one season at FC Barcelona. The midfielder will sign a one-year contract with the Citizens, the club announced on Friday.
In a personal message to Barcelona fans, Gündogan himself indicated that the move was primarily related to the Catalans’ strained financial situation. “Now I am leaving the club in a difficult situation, but if my departure can help the club financially, that makes me a little less sad,” said Gündogan.
The former DFB captain played 36 league games for Barca last season, scoring five goals, and ten games in the Champions League. He had previously played for City for seven years.
