In Gundelfingen (Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district), people voted against a tram connection to Freiburg in a referendum.
The municipality of Gundelfingen (Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district) with 12,000 inhabitants will continue to not plan a tram connection to neighboring Freiburg. This is the result of a referendum on the tram question on Sunday.
Almost 60 percent against trams
In the end, the result was clear: More than 58 percent of those who took part voted against resuming plans for a new tram line through the town. Voter turnout was over 60 percent, Mayor Raphael Walz announced at the end of the counting.
The question of whether the decades-old plans for a rail connection should be resumed has been an emotional debate in the town in recent weeks. Now that a decision has been made, alternative mobility concepts – such as electric buses and rental bicycles – will be pursued, Mayor Walz announced on Sunday evening.
New discussion about mobility
The proponents of the tram were disappointed after the referendum. Max-Peter Ratzel from the Mobility Citizens’ Meeting Gundelfingen working group also explained: They are proud that the people have decided with the referendum. The discussion also made it possible to bring the topic of public transport and mobility of the future back into the social discussion.
