Gummersbach –
At the beginning of the second half of the season there was nothing to gain for the second team of VfL Gummersbach in the third division. The handball players around coach Goncalo Miranda could not repeat the surprising home success in the first leg against Longericher SC, but lost significantly.
Longericher SC – VfL Gummersbach II 34:24 (14: 9). After a quarter of an hour it became clear in which direction the game should develop. Gummersbach was 3-1 (6th) in the lead when Longerich took control of the game. Six goals in a row ensured Cologne’s lead to 8: 3 (17th). The home side now mainly played out their physical superiority. In addition, there was the five-goal mortgage for the young VfL team.
The hopes of initiating a comeback after the half-time break quickly vanished into thin air. Because again it was Longericher SC who found their way back into the game better. So the gap to the 35th minute grew to seven hits (18:11). The confident restart of the home side was the decisive phase. “Five goals were too far behind. Unfortunately, the opponent was too good from a distance today, ”explained VfL coach Miranda.
The move from Gummersbach to the seventh field player did not have the desired effect. Overall, the guest defense had nothing to counter the Longericher offensive.
In the end, the guests more or less surrendered to their fate and only kept the score constant at ten goals in the final phase. However, the VfL coach was not entirely dissatisfied: “Our performance was okay. We played against a very strong opponent, ”said Miranda.
