Gujarat local body polls: BJP makes strides

Surat: The BJP has made great strides in the Gujarat local body elections. The BJP is also making strides in the municipal and panchayat elections after sweeping the corporations. When the first results of the February 28 polls came out, the BJP was far ahead of its rivals.

Elections were held for 81 municipalities, 31 district panchayats and 231 taluk panchayats. According to preliminary results, the BJP is leading in 54 municipalities. The Congress is leading in only two places. In the district panchayats, the BJP is leading in all the 15 constituencies. Congress is not leading anywhere.

The results were released in 58 places in the taluk panchayats. The BJP is leading in 51 of these constituencies. And Congress in seven. The BJP had swept all the six corporations in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar, where the results were declared a week ago. At the same time, the Congress failed to win even half of the wards it won in 2015.
