New Delhi: Gujarat Giants won their first win in the Women’s Premier League season. Giants defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by 19 runs. Chasing the huge target of 200 runs set by the giants, Smriti Mandana and her team managed to score only 180 runs for the loss of eight wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Ashley Gardner took two wickets for Gujarat while Kathryn Emma Bryce and Tanuja Kanwar took one wicket each.
Gujarat captain Beth Mooney won the toss and elected to bat at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. The Giants scored 199 runs for the loss of five wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. The Giants got the Himalayan total with the brilliant half-centuries of the openers Laura Volward and Beth Mooney.
RCB, who were aiming for a huge victory, faced a downfall right from the start. Captain Smriti Mandana, who has been in the best form of the season, was dismissed in the first ball of the fifth over. Ashley Gardner made things easy for the Giants by trapping Mandana in front of the wicket for 24 off 16 balls. Soon after, opener Sabhineni Meghana (4) was also run out.
Georgia Wareham, who scored 48 runs, and Richa Ghosh, who scored 30 runs, struggled but could not reach victory. Ellyse Perry (24), Sophie Devine (23) and Ekta Bisht (12) are the stars who crossed the double figure.
Earlier, the giants who batted first gave a brilliant performance. The partnership of Laura Volward and Beth Mooney, who put up a century partnership, gave the giants a good start. Both managed to add 140 runs for the first wicket.
Ekta Bisht broke this alliance by running out Laura. Laura returned to the dressing room after scoring 76 runs off 45 balls including 13 boundaries. Mooney continued the fight, teaming up with Phoebe Litchfield, who came in one-down. Lichfield was run out by Smriti Mandana who scored 18 runs. Ashley Gardner (0), Dayan Hemalatha (1) and Veda Krishnamurthy (1) who came out quickly returned.
Captain Beth Mooney remained at the crease even as wickets kept falling at one end. Mooney remained unbeaten on 85 runs off 51 balls. 12 boundaries and a six came from the star’s bat. Kathryn Emma Bryce remained unbeaten on one run.
