Snatched from FC Barcelona this summer, Marc Guiu made headlines this Thursday by being the author of a huge miss against Servette during the Conference League play-offs. The Blues still won (2-0) thanks to goals from Christopher Nkunku and Noni Madueke but the Spaniard failed to score on an action with the goal wide open
It is already one of the images of the season. Promising at FC Barcelona where he scored one goal in three La Liga games, Marc Guiu left his homeland to join Chelsea during the summer transfer window. Under the orders of Enzo Maresca, the Spanish striker made his first start in an official competition this season, during the Conference League play-off against Servette FC.
Against the Swiss team, Marc Guiu could score points, but did not express himself as he wanted. In the 50th minute, the 18-year-old forward put good pressure on goalkeeper Jeremy Frick who missed his clearance outside his area. Marc Guiu rushed towards the ball, but did not support his shot with his right, allowing the goalkeeper to come back while the goal was wide open.
Proof that luck was not on his side, the former Catalan saw the ball come back to his feet twice. The first attempt was again pushed back by Jeremy Frick, while the second was returned by a defender. A big blow for the man who would be replaced shortly before the hour mark by Cole Palmer.
The essentials are assured for Chelsea
Fortunately for Marc Guiu and Chelsea, this mistake was without consequence. Before this miss, Christopher Nkunku took charge of opening the scoring on a penalty in the 50th minute, the Frenchman thus opening his goal account with the Blues this season. Coming into play, Noni Madueke then scored the second goal in the 76th minute. An important success before the return match in Switzerland on August 29.
Facing a weaker opponent on paper, Enzo Maresca launched several recruits from the start such as goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, defenders Tosin Adarabioyo and Renato Veiga, midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, as well as striker Pedro Neto. After the first defeat of the season in the Premier League against Manchester City (0-2), the Blues will try to revive Sunday against Wolverhampton.
