Guitarist Peter Green, co-founder of Fleetwood Mac, is dead


Guitarist Peter Green, one of the founders of Fleetwood Mac British rock group, died in his sleep at the age of 73, the musician’s family announced on Saturday July 25, 2020, as quoted by the American news agency Associated Press.

Under the leadership of Green, a virtuoso guitarist like Eric Clapton, drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie, Fleetwood Mac first stood out in the late 1960s as a blues group in the wake of the rediscovery of the genre in Great Britain (British Blues Boom).

Author of titles like « Albatross » and « Oh Well » who shaped the style of the group and made it famous worldwide, Peter Green had also composed « Black Magic Woman », then immortalized by Carlos Santana in 1970.

After the departure of Peter Green in 1970 due to serious psychological problems, the group had successfully turned to pop over the next decade and achieved worldwide notoriety. with his album “Rumors”, published in 1977.

Despite this departure, Mick Fleetwood, co-founder of Fleetwood Mac, told AP in 2017 that Peter Green was largely responsible for the group’s success. Peter Green was one of eight band members inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

The singer Cat Stevens paid tribute to Peter Green on Twitter, presenting it as a “Unsung hero” and greeting his “Musical honesty and inventiveness”.
