Guinness record: researcher reaches all the deepest points on earth – not just one, but several world records fell on a mission of an explorer of the deep sea, which achieved something breathtaking in the truest sense of the word and yet somehow did not seem to find much resonance in the wider public. After all, someone dived here to the lowest points of five oceans.
Victor Vescovo comes from Texas in the USA and is an adventurer who can now claim to have visited all the deepest points on earth – confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2021. In February 2020, the Guinness officials met with Vescovo in Greece for a discussion:
Here he was just about to dive into the Calypso Depth – the deepest point in the Mediterranean Sea at 5,109 meters below sea level
There he showed the Guinness officials his special dive boat with which he undertook his unprecedented expedition into the depths of five seas. The name of the action is accordingly: “Five Deeps Expedition” (FDE).
Vescovo also told the Guinness people quite openly what drove him:
“I was amazed and a little sad when I found out that we would be in 2016 – 2016! – had not yet penetrated to the bottom of four of the five oceans. I honestly had the feeling that this is something we as a species should have done by then … I thought what an outstanding adventurer it would be to build the machines for it and take the journey for this goal ourselves. “
The Texan began to realize this goal between December 2018 and August 2019
He and his team completed the deepest manned dive of all time, exploring the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Southern and Arctic Oceans. A sensational mission, for which a very special submersible had to be constructed with the latest technology, which can withstand the enormous deep pressure.
The result of the construction process by manufacturer Triton Submarines from Florida: the DSV (Deep Sea Vehicle) “Limiting Factor”
With this special vehicle and its extremely resilient 90-millimeter titanium shell, Vescovo and his team were able to sink into the greatest possible depths – repeatedly without having to replace the machine, because the enormous pressure neither deformed nor damaged the “Limiting Factor” you. So a number of safe attempts could be made.
After gathering a highly experienced team of pioneers, Vescovo broke several records over time with the expedition, some of which you will find listed below.
In addition to diving into the deepest depths of the Mariana Trench, these are:
- First woman to reach the Challenger Deep: Kathryn Sullivan (USA) on June 7, 2020.
- First person to visit space and the Challenger Deep: Kathryn Sullivan, on October 5, 1984 and June 7, 2020.
- Largest vertical extent within Earth’s exosphere by an individual: Kathryn Sullivan, 622,085 km (386,546 mi).
- First woman to reach the highest and lowest point on earth: Vanessa O’Brien (UK / USA), on May 19, 2012 and June 12, 2020.
- Oldest person to visit Challenger Deep: Jim Wigginton (US, born Feb 23, 1949), aged 71 years and 124 days on Jun 26, 2020.
