The singer and musician Guinean Mory Kanté, known for the planetary tube “Yéké yéké” in the 1980s, died of a long illness Friday at the age of 70 in a hospital in Conakry, his son Balla Kanté announced to a correspondent for the AFP this Friday, May 22.
Mory Kanté, nicknamed the “electric griot”, helped popularize African and Guinean music around the world.
Guinean President Alpha Condé paid tribute to him in a message posted on Twitter.
