From March 7 to 11, 2023, Guinea participated in the intercontinental phase of the IHF Trophy in San José. Upon the arrival of the Guinean delegation in Costa Rica on March 3, 2023, the passports of all players, technical staff members and other members of the delegation were collected and kept by the Guinean Handball Federation.
The competition went well in Costa Rica where Guinea, in addition to a place as vice-champion of the intercontinental phase of the IHF Trophy, obtained its qualification for the Junior World Cup this year in Germany. After the presentation of the medals and the vice-champion trophy, the Guinean delegation was preparing to return to Conakry to better prepare for the World Cup in Germany.
This is the moment chosen by his 8 handball players to fraudulently leave the hotel for a destination of which we do not yet know.
The Guinean Handball Federation had informed the Costa Rican police to reinforce security around the hotel as we were on the eve of departure. Minister Lansana Bea Diallo personally congratulated the young people for the young people and invited them to come back to prepare for the World Cup. Bonuses are already available in Conakry.
Unfortunately for them, the Guinean Handball Federation of Guinea had already collected all the passports upon arrival, to avoid such things. They planned this escape and they are blocked at the Costa Rica-Mexico border for lack of official travel documents.
When the Federation noticed their absence at the hotel, we informed the Costa Rican authorities. Research has been carried out by the International Handball Federation, our supervisory ministry and especially INTERPOOL, with the help of the Costa Rican police.
The Guinean Handball Federation, in its desire to promote local talent, has built this team with local players. An investigation is open to know the identity of all the people involved in this affair and the executive office of the Guinean Handball Federation will take a sanction when the time comes.
The Guinean Handball Federation deplores the fact that because of the 8 people, the image of our country is affected internationally after a very good performance.
President Paye Camara and his colleagues in the executive office strongly condemn such behavior and apologize to the people of Guinea.
The rest of the handball players and the other members of the Guinean delegation will return to Conakry this Wednesday, March 15, 2023.
