A Guinea-Bissau-flagged cargo ship with 14 crew members on board sank off the Mediterranean coast of Turkey on Wednesday, killing at least three sailors. Five people have been rescued, while efforts to find the rest of the crew continue, Turkish officials were quoted as saying by the Associated Press.
The Joe 2 Ship sank off the coast of Kumlujah, in the province of Antalya he sailed to the Ukrainian port of Izmail from the Turkish port of Iskenderunsaid Governor Ersin Yazici. The vessel was carrying aluminumaccording to the state-run Anatolia Agency.
The cause of the ship’s sinking remains unclear for now. The Prosecutor’s Office of Kumuldja has started an investigation.
The Turkish Coast Guard Command said it received a distress call at 3:47 a.m. and dispatched a ship, several boats and two helicopters. Two crew members were rescued by Coast Guard helicopters, while three others were rescued by other ships in the area, the release said.
All crew members are Syrian nationals.
Rescue operations are hampered by bad weather and rough seas in the area of the incident.
