Guild of corn growers in Pelaya, Cesar, demand that the National Government take measures against production losses

The corn growers union and community in the area joined together to block the Oriente trunk near the municipality of Pelaya, Cesar, after recording losses in production.

According to versions provided by some of those who supported the blockade on the road, the situation would have been caused by the low prices of corn in this part of the region, which generated disagreements between the growers of the product, who came together to call the attention of the departmental government to manage dialogue tables in the municipality, which allow reaching agreements to level prices, given that the detriment of the crop would be affecting those who depend on agricultural activity.

The corn union in that part of Cesar is going through a crisis, we are planting at a loss, this is because the National Government has allowed corn imports to have an impact on the internal price, which affects the national producer totally and “We have to plant so we don’t actually generate the resources or profits that are expected.”said a member of the Cesar corn union.

Likewise, he emphasized that if they did not receive a response, they would continue with the strike at dawn on Wednesday, January 17, in the Ruta del Sol road corridor.

The protesters indicated that they only seek to be heard and claim their rights as producers, stating that they will remain in place until there is a response from government entities to undertake dialogues that will resolve the crisis that would be affecting the corn farming sector.

Given the situation, this medium attempted to establish communication with the departmental Government Secretary Eduardo Esquivel, to find out what conclusions would be reached with the corn growers’ union, however, no response was received.

Until the closing of this edition, there was no information about agreements between the Cesar corn growers union and the National Government, nor that they have complied with the interruption on the Ruta del Sol highway.
