Guidelines for Bringing Medicine to School: Ensuring Student Safety and Health

Public and private school administrations have circulated a model for bringing medicine to school in order to ensure the safety of students, provide them with the necessary health care, and provide a healthy and safe educational environment. The model issued by the Emirates Health Services Corporation includes 10 requirements that parents must adhere to, in order to ensure the safety of their children.

The form for bringing medicine to school stressed taking into account dividing the medicine into two packages and asking the pharmacy when purchasing the medicine to place an original label for each package so that one package is kept at home and another package is sent to the school in case of necessity.

Rules

School administrations reported that this model will make parents feel psychologically comfortable and reassured, as it allows the presence of medications in the school, according to followed controls and procedures, and reduces the anxiety of parents whose children suffer from chronic diseases or special health conditions. He pointed out that it is absolutely forbidden to bring medication with the student, as it is not allowed Having the medicine in the student’s possession during school hours unless there is permission from the school doctor for the student to carry the medicine for quick access to it in emergency cases.

She explained that school clinics play an important role in promoting the health and well-being of students, and they are authorized to follow up on the student’s health condition, including supervising the administration of medication doses within the school, and they have many roles through which they promote health awareness and good health practices among students, and reduce absence from school. Due to health problems, the workers in these clinics provide various services to students, including education and awareness of healthy habits necessary to raise the level of their health culture.

The requirements stressed that all medications must be transported to school by an adult and delivered to those concerned, and that children are not allowed to carry medications. Prescription or non-prescription medications (including vitamins) that are brought to school require written permission from the child’s doctor and the student’s guardian.

The requirements also included that all medications must be brought to school with the original packaging of the medication and the medication label of the company producing the medication prepared by the pharmacist, taking into account the presence of “the child’s name – the name of the medication – the necessary medication dose – the number of times during the day – the method of taking the medication – the name of the doctor who prescribed the medication.” – The date the prescription was written – The expiration date.

doses

The requirements explained that for medications that must be taken 3 times a day, the first dose can be taken in the morning at home, followed by the second dose after school hours, and the last dose before bedtime, and no dose needs to be taken during school hours, and that for medications that must be taken 4 times a day, only one dose can be taken. During the school day, it is necessary to ensure equal time periods within a 24-hour period.

In turn, school administrations circulated a form to approve the form for bringing medicine to school to parents, so that the student’s guardian must give sufficient information about the child’s medical need for treatment or if there is a need for special care, and inform the school nurse or doctor of that or any change in the medicine. Or the medication dose if the guardian delivers the medication to the school clinic.

If the student refuses to take the medication, the nurse will not force the student to take the medication, but they will record this in the student’s health record and inform the guardian.
