Guide to Dress Trends in 2023

For many, a dress is the fashion item most associated with important events, whether it’s a prom dress, a wedding dress, an outfit for a big birthday party, or even a dress for just an unforgettable night out with friends.

Each season, designers and retailers offer fresh interpretations of iconic dresses, both playing with new silhouettes and unexpected color combinations, and experimenting with innovative fabrics. However, in whatever form it takes, the dress is a wardrobe staple that will never lose its relevance.

So what’s in store for Spring/Summer 2023 dresses? Bodycon shapes seem to be the fashion term this season, whether it’s stretch knits, second-skin dresses, maxi dresses or strapless denim dresses.

Second-skin (fitting) dress

Fit and stretch, second-skin dresses were definitely seen on the Spring/Summer 2023 runways. The beauty of this dress is that it can just as easily be dressed up for an event (just add chunky jewelry and heels) as it can be worn with boots on the weekend.

Asymmetric cut

The asymmetric trend is perhaps the most eclectic of these trends, as it can take on a variety of forms, from a lightweight cotton shirtdress to a body-hugging knit mini.

Nightwear style dress

According to fashion search engine Lyst, searches for nightgowns have increased by 38% since the start of this year, with “lace”, “black” and “satin” being the most frequently used search terms. This will come as no surprise to anyone who has noticed the sudden emergence of sleepwear-inspired combos on the market.

Denim dress

With turn-of-the-century inspired everything flooding the runways, it was only a matter of time before the denim dress made a comeback. Lyst reports that searches for denim dresses are up 62% over the past three months, with Mango, Diesel, Ganni and Alexander McQueen being the top brands.

Advanced maxi

Forget flowing bohemian dresses and ball gowns, this year the maxi dress has taken on a stylish girl form. In many ways overlapping with the second-skin dress trend, these new, improved maxi dresses are tighter than the styles of previous decades.
