Guidance for Diabetes Sufferers on Dietary Needs: Doctors Emphasize the Importance of Adjustment

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Internal Medicine Specialist Doctor from Medistra Hospital Dr Gunawan said that sufferers diabetes have no restrictions regarding food. However, diabetes sufferers need to adjust their intake according to their body’s needs.

“So diabetics don’t have any restrictions, they can eat whatever they want, but the amount is adjusted to our body’s capacity,” said Dr. Gunawan in a seminar which was attended online, Saturday (16/12/2023).

Dr Gunawan said many diabetes sufferers asked whether they were still allowed to eat white rice. He said that diabetes sufferers are still allowed to eat white rice, but in portions adjusted to suit their needs energy needs body, especially for those who exercise regularly.

“For example, there is a person with diabetes who has just been detected, his sugar has just risen, but he still has a lot of insulin capacity, he is thin, he still exercises regularly. Well, exercise requires energy. If he doesn’t eat rice, he will immediately get tired in the middle of the road while exercising, he won’t be able to exercise again. So you can eat rice but regulate the amount,” he advised.

However, Dr Gunawan reminded the importance of diabetes sufferers to consult with a nutritionist to determine the right amount of intake, according to the individual’s needs.

In the context of drinks, Dr. Gunawan highlighted the difference between vegetable juice and fruit juice. Vegetable juice has a low glycemic index so it is relatively safer than fruit juice.

The glycemic index is a measure of how quickly a food or drink affects the rise blood sugar inside the body.

However, if diabetics want to consume fruit juice, he reminded them of the need to choose fruit with a low glycemic index, such as apples and pears, to minimize the impact of increasing blood sugar.

By choosing vegetable juice with a low glycemic index, diabetes sufferers can regulate their blood sugar levels in a more controlled manner. “So we only use fruit juices that have a low glycemic index,” said Dr Gunawan.
