Guggenheim in New York: Artists design exhibition

Six artists, six different perspectives on the 20th century: the first show curated by artists in the exhibition house starts today at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. “Artistic License: Six Takes on the Guggenheim Collection” by Cai Guo-Qiang, Paul Chan, Jenny Holzer, Julie Mehretu, Richard Prince and Carrie Mae Weems can be seen in the museum in Central Park until the beginning of next year.

“We invited them to browse our collection and find out which pieces they were interested in,” said Guggenheim curator Nancy Spector. The result was an exhibition that was exciting, precisely because it did not always correspond to the textbook.

Each of the artists received a floor of the rotunda museum for their interpretation of the years between 1900 and 1980. The show, which also includes 88 works that have not yet been shown, reflects the individual approach of the artists. For example, the US concept artist Holzer exhibits pieces by women without exception.
