The Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, Mohammed Sadiki, carried out, on Tuesday, a field visit to the province of Guercif during which he launched the Integrated Rural Development Project for Mountain Areas (PADERM) and work on planting profitable production sectors that are tolerant to climate change.
Accompanied during this visit by the Governor of the province of Guercif, professionals, elected officials and a large delegation of ministry officials, Mr. Sadiki learned about the details of the Integrated Rural Development Project for the Mountain Areas of the Oriental (PADERMO), in the province of Guercif.
With an investment of 410.9 MDH over a period of 7 years, PADERMO in the Province of Guercif has as its main objective the improvement of the living conditions of the rural population in mountain areas in a sustainable manner and to reduce its vulnerability to climate change.
It also aims to improve the income of rural families through improving agricultural production, diversifying sources of income, adding value to products and improving their marketing.
On this occasion, the minister chaired the launch of saffron planting through the distribution of 46 tons of saffron bulbs as part of this program for the benefit of 30 beneficiaries, organized into cooperatives. This recent sector in the province will be mainly developed in the commune of Berkine.
At the level of the Saka territorial commune, the minister learned about the regional and provincial program for the development of the cactus sector within the framework of the solidarity agriculture projects of the Regional Agricultural Plan of the Generation Green strategy. It aims to increase and diversify the income of beneficiaries through the diversification of production systems and the adoption of sectors capable of adapting to climatic conditions.
Mr. Sadiki gave the opportunity to launch the work of planting 100 hectares of cactus resistant to cochineal. This operation will breathe new life into this sector at the provincial level.
The Regional Agricultural Plan provides for the planting of 20,850 hectares of cactus by 2030 and the increase in production to 126,000 tons, which should generate 410 million dirhams of added value and the creation of 761,000 working days. This Plan also provides for the construction and equipment of 3 cactus valorization units on a regional scale for a total investment of 10 million dirhams.
In the province of Guercif, it is planned to plant 500 hectares of varieties of cactus resistant to cochineal, to dig 5 boreholes for the sustainability of the project, to build 5 irrigation water storage basins and to acquire 5 mobile tanks for the benefit of 580 farmers for a total investment of 10.22 MDH.
The minister highlighted the importance of these projects, which are part of the Integrated Rural Development Plan for mountain areas, for which approximately 411 million dirhams have been allocated, and which concerns production sectors adapted to the region (carob trees, saffron and cactus).
He stressed, in a statement to the press, that this Plan also includes hydro-agricultural development, the opening up of farms, support for animal production, beekeeping and honey production.
He added that it is also about developing units to increase the added value of these products in a way that contributes to the development of this area and improving farmers’ incomes in order to achieve the objectives of the Generation Green strategy, which aims to promote the emergence of an agricultural middle class.
