Vilhjalmur Vilhjalmsson, lawyer for Albert Gudmundssonreleased a statement to the agency ANSA after the decision expressed by the Rejkyavik Prosecutor’s Office to appeal against his acquittal in the first instance of the trial opened against the Fiorentina striker for sexual misconduct.
The lawyer says: “We trust that Albert Gudmundsson will also be acquitted again by the National Court. He has already been declared innocent in the first instance by the Icelandic district court. The judge was very clear at the time of the sentence, Albert’s acquittal was very well motivated, there was no doubt about his innocence and it was a legally correct decision.”
Continues and concludes: “We are surprised by the Public Prosecutor’s decision to appeal, but Icelandic law allows this last level of appeal. We remain calm and confident because Albert is completely innocent as has already been decreed by the district court judge. Albert will continue to play normally as he has always done and will also be available to his national team.”
