Director of professional football Eric Gudde of the KNVB does not exclude that the cup final between Feyenoord and FC Utrecht will still be played. He emphasizes on Sunday that in that case there will be no competition for a European ticket.
“That game cannot be played before August 31 anyway,” Gudde said at the NOS to the fact that due to the corona crisis, the government has banned playing professional football until at least September 1.
“So the places for European football are already forgiven. You can play a kind of opening match, a gala match in September or October. We can always look at that. But it is no longer a match for a European ticket.”
Due to the government’s decision, the KNVB discontinued the season in the Eredivisie and Keuken Kampioen Division at the end of last month and also canceled the cup final. The European tickets went to the top five teams at the highest level in the Netherlands.
FC Utrecht misses out on number six everywhere
FC Utrecht, which missed out on number six, reacted furiously to this and immediately considered legal action. The Utrechters have since renounced this and try to enforce a final battle on Tuesday by means of a conversation with the KNVB.
If that does not work out, FC Utrecht will report the situation to UEFA. The club has sent a file to the European Football Association, which can impose the KNVB to organize the cup final. In extreme cases, FC Utrecht will go to CAS.
The situation is extra bitter for FC Utrecht because number five Willem II only had three points ahead and had played a game more. The Tilburgers also had a worse goal difference. Feyenoord finished third and may therefore play in Europe next season.
