In the gubernatorial election in the US state of Virginia, the Republican candidate is ahead. According to CNN, Glenn Youngkin was now more than ten percentage points ahead of Democrat Terry McAuliffe, who is supported by US President Joe Biden. In the course of the election evening, however, the gap between the two candidates narrowed.
The election in Virginia a year before the congressional election is being followed closely in the country. A few months ago it looked like a comfortable win for McAuliffe, then Republican Youngkin caught up in polls – and was even slightly ahead recently. McAuliffe (64) was governor from 2014 to 2018, Youngkin (54) is a successful businessman. Former President Donald Trump supports him.
The Democrats have held governorship there for the past eight years. In Virginia, governors are not allowed to run for two consecutive terms. But you can – like McAuliffe – compete a second time later. The current governor is Democrat Ralph Northam.
In the gubernatorial elections in New Jersey, the Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli was ahead of the Democratic incumbent Phil Murphy. The elections are seen as a kind of mood test for Biden’s politics, which has been ruling the White House for almost a year.
New York: Democrat Adams becomes mayor
According to unanimous forecasts, the Democrat Eric Adams will be the new mayor of the US metropolis of New York. The 61-year-old former district mayor of Brooklyn prevailed in the vote against his Republican opponent Curtis Sliwa, as reported by the news agency AP and the broadcaster CNN. Adams becomes the second Afro-American head of the city in New York.
Adams was considered a moderate candidate who wants to lead the highest office with a course between left and centrist forces. In addition to the economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic – which killed more than 30,000 New Yorkers – one of Adam’s most difficult tasks is likely to be dealing with the police properly. As of January, he will succeed Bill de Blasio, who was no longer allowed to run after two terms in office.
