The Monetary Board (JM) will give its opinion on the credit card bill
The president of the central bank and the JM considers it important to regulate and regulate the operations and transactions that are already carried out with plastic money.
The members of the Monetary Board (JM) know, in their session this Wednesday, an opinion on initiative 5544, Credit Card Law and it will be sent this Thursday to Congress.
Álvaro González Ricci, president of the Bank of Guatemala (Banguat) and the JM, announced to Free Press, Some points being considered:
“The opinion is that this legislation is viewed favorably and I believe that the JM will also see it that way, because what is being done is to regulate and regulate some phases of the entire credit card operation scheme in Guatemala. In particular, it favors us a lot because it is part of the National Financial Inclusion Strategy, which includes having this law,” he noted.
He clarified that what is included in this bill is what is already done, since the real interest rate is already published and that is something that was not done before, and what is being proposed is the obligation to facilitate the issuance of a settlement , to be able to request a payment agreement to stop the increase in interest, among other aspects, “but let’s wait for what JM says.”
However, he pointed out that it is important that Congress be very careful to take all opinions into account, since “the least expected is for the Constitutional Court to declare some article unconstitutional, as already happened at the time, and bring down the whole law.
“It is a law that favors account holders, which has already been discussed previously, it is not new and it seems that there is will among all the actors on both sides (banks and users). We hope that what Congress approves does not have major amendments that could violate the outline of the initiative,” he emphasized.
