The president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, stated this Sunday that he will seek to modify the law that prohibits the removal of the attorney general and head of the Public Ministry, Consuelo Porras, who attempted a “coup d’état” against him in 2023 to prevent his inauguration .
“The dark cycle of Consuelo Porras must end now,” Arévalo said in a message on national television, where he specified that he will send a law reform to Parliament so that the legislative groups endorse the new regulations and show “their commitment to justice and TRUE”.
This is the strongest initiative of the social democratic president in his almost 120 days in office against the prosecutor, who is sanctioned by the United States and the European Union for being considered “corrupt.”
Consuelo Porras requests protection from the Constitutional Court
Prior to Arévalo’s radio and television network, the questioned attorney general of Guatemala presented this Sunday an appeal for protection before the Constitutional Court, the highest judicial instance of the Central American country, ensuring that the president could announce in his message “actions that “can lead to attacks against the physical integrity and life” of Porras and other officials of the Prosecutor’s Office, according to a statement from the entity.
The appeal filed asks the Constitutional Court to “order the President of the Republic to refrain from adopting political (…), financial or budgetary measures through which he intends to take control of the Public Ministry.”
In February 2024, Arévalo denounced Porras before the Supreme Court for “breach of duties,” but the court has not yet ruled on the matter. “We will not rest until we achieve the removal of this threat to democracy through legal means,” Arévalo said in reference to Porras in the last weeks of April.
