Guatemala Receives Coffins of Migrants Killed in Mexico Station Fire

The operation was headed by Foreign Minister Mario Búcaro, who since yesterday traveled to the neighboring country to coordinate the transfer, the expense of which was covered by the Mexican government.

In the Air Force, Búcaro offered his condolences to the families that were present there to receive the coffins, on behalf of President Alejandro Giammattei.

According to the list disclosed here, the ages of the deceased range from 21 to 51 years and belong to the departments of Huehuetenango (Santa Eulalia, Malacancito and Jacaltenango); Izabal (El Estor); Sololá (Nahualá); Totonicapán (San Francisco El Alto); Chimaltenango (San Martín Jilotepeque) and Suchitepéquez (Chicacao).

Likewise, to Quiché (Santa Cruz del Quiché), Quetzaltenango (Olintepeque) and Alta Verapaz (San Pedro Carchá and Cobán), mostly municipalities with high hundreds of poverty and violence.

The Foreign Ministry also confirmed that the repatriation will be immediate to each of the communities of origin, where they will say their last goodbyes together with their families.

For now, the arrival of two fatalities will remain pending, still in the process of identification through genetic profiles.

In the case of the injured, the note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minex) ensures that humanitarian visas were arranged for relatives to stay in Mexico while their loved ones recover.

The day before, Búcaro verified the evolution of two Guatemalans hospitalized as a result of the tragedy that occurred on the night of March 27, when 39 migrants lost their lives as a result of the fire that broke out at the station.

The nationals were the majority (19), as were the injured.

Both the foreign minister and officials from the Guatemalan Embassy in Mexico will continue to ensure the well-being and care of the injured, according to a press release.
