“With today’s shipment, the total donation of vaccines from the United States Government to Guatemala amounts to 6.5 million doses of Moderna, including previous shipments of 1.5 million and 3 million in July 2021,” said a statement from the American embassy.

He adds that “the United States Government will continue to help protect Guatemalans against the ravages of Covid-19 and reduce barriers to rebuilding the Guatemalan economy.”

“In the United States, we are close to celebrating Thanksgiving, and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate it than by welcoming two million doses of vaccines to Guatemala. With this additional donation, the United States has delivered a total of 6.5 million Modern, safe and effective vaccines, enough to vaccinate 20% of Guatemalans, and which is equivalent to 48% of the doses needed to vaccinate the population over 12 years, ”said Ambassador William Popp.

The statement adds that “as President Biden said: from the beginning of my presidency, we have been clear that we also have to attack this virus around the world. This is about our responsibility – our humanitarian obligation to save as many lives as we can – and our responsibility to our values. We will help lift the world out of this pandemic, working together with our global partners. “

To date, the United States has donated more than 1.2 billion vaccines worldwide.

It was reported that “additional assistance from the United States Government includes the donation of more than 1.2 million syringes, 60 ventilators, six freezers to ensure the cold chain in storage, two mobile hospitals, laboratory equipment, protective equipment. , and thousands of Covid-19 tests. Investment in vaccines

According to the Ministry of Health, to date, Q614 million have been paid to Russia for the purchase of the Sputnik V vaccine and another Q71.5 million to the Covax mechanism, while what has been paid to AstraZeneca cannot be disclosed by the contract of confidentiality that they signed.

For freights to transport vaccines, Guatemala has paid Q11 million 200 thousand, although this last flight was also a United donation.
