The Guatemalan Migration Institute (IGM) reported today that it received 285 refugee applications from the beginning of January of this year until March, of which it approved 82.
51 percent are women, 46 men and three percent are LGBTI, the entity detailed, adding that these are citizens who fled their countries for different reasons and were accepted in compliance with the law.
Regarding nationalities, 39 percent corresponded to El Salvador; They are followed by Honduras, with 27; Nicaragua, 23; Venezuela, seven; and others, four percent.
The consolidated data based on the registry of the Department of Recognition of Refugee Status of the Subdirectorate of Care and Protection of Fundamental Rights indicates that 1,148 people have had endorsement in this regard since 1986.
The IGM carries out the analysis and approval of applications jointly with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
At the beginning of last March, Guatemala made official the implementation of a new Migration Policy, in which at least 41 entities intervene.
“This is a guiding instrument so that institutional efforts are aimed at guaranteeing comprehensive care for all migrants,” the IGM reported in a statement.
According to analysts, the document focuses on national development goals until 2032 and contemplates the progressive and gradual implementation of 150 lines of action over the next 10 years.
Prioritizes sustainable integration or reintegration in host communities, effective migration management and the linking of international migration to local and national development.
