Guatemala, May 9, 2023 – Within the framework of Vaccination Week in the Americas, the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance -MSPAS- of Guatemala, with the technical support of the Pan American Health Organization -PAHO-, announced the official launch of the “Virtual Vaccination Coverage Dashboard”. The dashboard represents a significant advance in monitoring vaccination coverage at the national level and is vital for improving the planning and execution of vaccination activities. The interactive tool contains graphs, maps, and charts related to vaccination coverage, accessible to both health personnel and the general population.
With this information available and online, intersectoral work will be facilitated to unite efforts to guarantee the maintenance of useful coverage and reduce the risk of the reemergence of preventable diseases such as measles and polio.
Real-time data on vaccination coverage is broken down by type of vaccine, number of doses, department, and municipality of residence. The dashboard also shows coverage trends since 2017 and projections for the current year.
The vaccines included in the board are: Hepatitis B, BCG, Oral against Polio (OPV), Intramuscular against Polio (IPV), Pentavalent, Rotavirus, Pneumococcus, SPR, DPT and HPV. This information is essential to make informed decisions and to identify areas that require further attention in terms of vaccination coverage.
The dashboard was developed in the R programming language, using the Shiny package to present dynamic information. The data comes from the Health Management Information System (SIGSA) and is subject to updates according to the records of reporting units and live births of the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
The tool has a user help option that explains the interaction of the dashboard elements and is available on the Ministry of Health website.
