Guatemala detains 451 migrants, including several Cubans

The Guatemalan National Civil Police detained 451 irregular migrants between Wednesday and Thursday, including several Cubans. In addition, they prosecuted six people identified as Mauricio, Josue, Gerson, Jonathan, Raúl and Cristian for the crime of human trafficking.

The authorities informed through their social networks that medical assistance and food were provided to the Cubans and the other migrants, among whom were also Venezuelans, Colombians, Ecuadorians, Chinese and Africans.

Guatemalan law establishes a payment between 25 and 88 dollars (from 200 to 700 quetzales) for evading immigration control, which allows migrants to pay the fine and be able to continue their journey to the United States. Those who do not cover the sanction are returned to Honduras, a country that, so far this year, has registered the entry of approximately 15,044 Cubans irregularly. Coyotes are fined $13 for transporting illegal immigrants.

This Wednesday, the National Civil Police arrested 32 migrants from Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia and China who entered the country irregularly in the town of Esquipulas, in the department of Chiquimula. These people were handed over to the Guatemalan Migration Institute.

The day before, the Police detained four coyotes who were transporting 176 migrants in two school buses. The capture occurred in the Los Esclavos village, Cuilapa, after three vehicles were detected escorting the buses.

As part of the measures to contain the migratory flow through the customs of the border towns, Migration of Guatemala reinforced since last January the surveillance in Agua Caliente and El Carrizo. In addition, the National Civil Police and the Army strategically located posts on the main transit routes in Izabal, Zacapa, Petén, Chiquimula, Suchitepéquez, Huehuetenango, San Marcos, and Guatemala City.

Guatemala is a natural step for thousands of migrants seeking to reach US territory. According to official figures, more than 800 Cubans have entered this country irregularly this year. The Guatemalan Institute of Migration also recorded the receipt of 235 refugee applications of natives of the Island, ranking below Venezuela (369), Nicaragua (839), El Salvador (1,264) and Honduras (1,352).
