Guatemala approaches 20,000 deaths from covid-19 by 2020

Guatemala City, December 13. Guatemalan health authorities have recorded 19,964 deaths from covid-19 as of Tuesday, the highest number of deaths in Central America since the pandemic began in 2020.

The Guatemalan Ministry of Health indicated on Tuesday in its daily update on the disease that one death and 2,299 new cases had occurred in the past 24 hours, after processing 10,017 tests.

Guatemala reports a recent increase in cases due to a subvariant of the omicron variant, as reported by health authorities.

Most of the new infections are concentrated in the north-east of the country and in Guatemala City, and the age group most affected is the age group between 20 and 29 years.

Guatemala is the Central American country with the highest number of recorded deaths from covid-19 with 19,964 officially recorded deaths, followed by Honduras with 11,054 deaths.

In addition, according to official data, there are currently about 16,664 active cases of the disease.

In November, the social organization called Data Laboratory unveiled a study warning that only 5 of Guatemala’s 340 municipalities have 70 percent of their population vaccinated with two doses of the vaccine.

In this sense, official data detail that 7 million people out of the 18 million who inhabit the Central American country have the complete vaccination regimen.

Vaccination in Guatemala is the lowest in the isthmus, according to data from the Central American Integration System (SICA), since, according to the regional organization, it is the only country in the region that does not exceed 50% complete vaccination.( 2 doses).
