Guatemala appreciates Brazil’s support to fight the Atitlán volcano fire

Guatemala City, Mar 15 (AGN) .- The Government of Guatemala He thanked Brazil for the support given to fight the fire that is registered in the Atitlán volcano, in Sololá. The aid from Brazil was presented through hours of flight of a tanker aircraft to fight the fire, it was said.

In an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minex) He explained that this support was provided after Guatemala appealed “to the existing good relations of friendship and cooperation” with Brazil.

“The government of President Alejandro Giammattei, through Minex, expresses its deep gratitude to the people and Government of Brazil for the immediate support to put out this fire that threatens our plant and natural wealth,” the statement added.

The aircraft has been supporting the Guatemalan Government since Sunday, March 14. That day four flights were made, while this Monday the number rose to seven.

According to Minex, the request was made after the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) provide details about the claim that is recorded in the Atitlán volcano.

According to Conred, the claim is currently 65 percent under control. The institution explained that four outbreaks have been identified in the area, of which two are one hundred percent controlled.

Likewise, Conred explained that the aircraft with the Brazilian flag has 5 hours of flight, out of a total of 15, to combat the phenomenon.

In addition, in the fight against the fire, 220 elements of the Guatemalan Army have been deployed and 9 thousand gallons of water have been discharged on the identified sources.
