Manchester City manager Josep Guardiola does not seem to be a fan of the Super League, although he still has many questions about plans presented by City, among other things. For example, the Spaniard does not understand why a club with an honors list such as Ajax should not be allowed to join.
“The people behind the Super League must very quickly explain to the world why one club is allowed to participate and another club is not allowed,” Guardiola said on Tuesday at his press conference for Wednesday’s Premier League game with Aston Villa. “Why is Ajax not there with four Champions League victories? I would really like to hear that.”
Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Juventus, AC Milan and Internazionale announced on Sunday that they wanted to start their own closed competition to generate more income.
The intention is that three more ‘permanent’ clubs will be added to the Super League. In addition, the founders want to invite five teams every season. Ajax or another Dutch club could be there, but it is still unclear how that selection works.
Guardiola stressed on Tuesday that he finds it “uncomfortable” to comment on the Super League. “Because it is only an embryo. There is only an explanation, so I miss a lot of information. But you can ask me anything and I will give my opinion”, the top trainer told the press. “It is an honor, I am a good spokesperson.”
The Catalan then stated that he is against a closed competition, without promotion and relegation or the obligation to qualify. “It’s not a sport if it doesn’t matter if you lose.”
‘I support my club’
Guardiola, who heard of the final Super League plans a few hours before the official statement on Sunday, said he will continue to support his club.
“I know the people here and I am still part of Manchester City. But I also have my own opinion. Although I am not the best person to speak about this. You should ask the chairman what the idea is for the future of Manchester City. the football.”
UEFA threatens the twelve founders of the Super League with exclusion from the Champions League, already this season. City will play the first match in the semi-finals next week against Paris Saint-Germain, which is openly against the Super League.
“We’re just going to play next week and try to reach the final,” said Guardiola. “And next season we will play European football, because we deserved it on the field. But now the players have to focus on the game with Aston Villa, and so do I as manager.”
