Spanish coach Josep Guardiola attributed his main successes to his senior players in the clubs he supervised, on the eve of the Champions League final, which his English team, Manchester City, is playing against Inter Milan.
When asked about the reasons for his success, the former Barcelona player and coach mentioned, in a press conference he held before the expected match in Istanbul, the Argentine world champion Lionel Messi and the Norwegian striker Erling Haaland.
And he continued, “To have many good players. To have Messi in the past, and Haaland now. And I’m not kidding. It’s the truth.”
“Having so many good players is my success,” Guardiola said. “The coach doesn’t score a goal.”
The former Spanish international won the title of the main continental competition as a coach in 2009 and 2011 with Messi in the ranks of Barcelona, and he will play his second final as coach of Manchester City with Haaland, the number one offensive weapon in the world.
And the former Bayern Munich coach expressed his confidence in the ability of the young striker, who scored 52 goals in all competitions this season, to be decisive against Inter, after a question from a journalist who indicated the opportunities that the Norwegian wasted in front of the goal in recent meetings.
Pep said: “I am not here to talk about the average rate of Erling Haaland’s contributions in front of goal. If you have any doubts about Haaland’s ability to score, you will be the only one. I have no doubt, tomorrow (Saturday) he will be ready to help us win the Champions League.”
