FIFA head of global development, Arsene Wenger, has submitted a proposal for World Cup held every two years. Pep Guardiola welcome the idea.
The former Arsenal manager has conveyed his ideas to the public since he was still a coach. Wenger’s idea to ask for the World Cup to be held biennially has sparked pros and contracts from UEFA, which will boycott if approved.
Manchester City manager Guardiola doesn’t think the proposition should be rejected outright. He wanted to first hear the arguments regarding all the viewpoints of the biennial World Cup idea.
“I’m always happy when new ideas are put forward for discussion. You don’t have to criminalize ideas,” Guardiola was quoted as saying by the Independent.
“Clubs and leagues defend their positions, FIFA maintain their positions and UEFA maintain their positions. That’s why when we talk about the idea of global football, it’s ridiculous because everyone just looks after themselves.”
“The World Cup is amazing. It’s the biggest tournament and, as a spectator, I always enjoy watching it. If I can watch it every two years, that’s great.”
“I completely agree with Arsene Wenger that if not the World Cup it will be another competition – the Confederations Cup or creating a new tournament. What I see Wenger has proposed is a tournament of the greatest quality.”
“I am happy that a man who has done extraordinary things in world football – not just the Premier League – has put the situation on the table. We will talk about the good things and the bad things related to that,” Guardiola insisted. .
If the biennial World Cup is approved, the players will be increasingly short of rest. This can certainly be contrary to Guardiola’s complaints regarding the busy schedule in English football.
“The only reality is that top players only have two weeks of rest, not three months for physical and mental regeneration. It’s only two or three weeks off,” Guardiola revealed.
