Guanajuato. Guanajuato. April 23, 2023.– The Gto Health System began the “Intensive Day of Canine Antirabies Vaccination and Felina” 2023 that covers from April 23 to 29.
Dr. Daniel Alberto Díaz Martínez, Secretary of Health in Guanajuato reported that the anti-rabies week has the purpose of applying up to 800,000 doses and vaccinating a greater number of dogs and cats with 1,200 traveling brigades and fixed points.
The Gto Health System began this Sunday the Intensive State Conference coordination with the 8 Health Jurisdictions, with a very important active participation.
He explained that Guanajuato has been free of cases of human rabies for 30 years and 24 years free of canine and feline rabies, and this is largely due to the commitment of the population to safeguard the entity free of said disease.
Given the emergence of cases in other latitudes of the country, the Gto Health System maintains close epidemiological surveillance with a preventive approach.
The Health System has a vast inventory of anti-rabies treatment for any emergency.
In addition to having a laboratory capacity with supplies and personnel to carry out the diagnosis of rabies in both humans and animals and provide treatment to those who require it and prevent them from developing the disease in the event of an animal bite.
In the State Public Health Laboratory, up to 2,800 samples were processed last year to guarantee that there is no circulation of the virus in dogs and cats, an activity that has been replicated in the last eight years.
He explained that in Guanajuato, 46 percent of the attacks by dogs and cats are inside the home and the rest outside the home.
In addition, it has not been necessary to start human anti-rabies treatments because over 99 percent are vaccinated and domiciled dogs, while the street dogs that attack after an epidemiological investigation are found to be animals with a community owner.
The also head of the Health System added that any person attacked by an animal, whether stray, wild or domestic, must receive care in the emergency area and this service has trained personnel.
If there is suspicion of rabies, treatment is provided with antibodies that will neutralize and counteract the action of the virus immediately, and the human rabies vaccine or antibiotics can be applied, for which public health systems are well equipped.
