This Sunday, August 27, on the CinemaMalecón esplanade (Malecón and Loja), the ‘Guafyaquileños’ canine festival will take place, a free activity open to families and their dogs (and also cats), with care and training talks, parade , responsible adoption point and vaccination brigades. It will be from 10:00 to 16:00.
Cidinha de Weber, Marketing and Communication Manager of the Malecón 2000 Foundation, explains that there will be a well-armed pet ecosystem, so that citizens can enjoy it, whether they bring a pet or not. It is mainly an entertainment show, but there is also an educational component.
“We are going to have training talks from the Canine Leader (Miguel Montalván). He’s going to teach how to give pets directions so we can connect with them and discipline them.
Montalván will arrive at an area set up as a dog park and accompanied by eight handlers. “It’s a little show from some of the school dogs (we have about 52 every day).” Students will pass tests of agility, jumping, tunneling and other games. They will pass groups of people with pets in groups of ten to try to give them individualized advice.
Since there will be an adoption day, the Canine Leader reminds those interested that it is not just about taking the dog and keeping it at home. “Even if you don’t believe it, he was perhaps happier on the street, where he saw other dogs and walked a lot. If that day you are going to adopt a dog, approach me with confidence so that I can guide you, because this is like when you go to buy a machine and they give you instructions,” says Montalván, who is preparing a book to guide the adoption process. .

“This is like the first date, when you go, you don’t kiss and hug right off the bat; you go step by step You have to calm down the dogs, because that makes them feel that you are a good leader, that you have good energy, and they follow you”. The trainer adds that dogs don’t do well with people who flood them with emotions. “I don’t know if it has happened to you, that the dog is attached to the grandfather or the father who does not pay attention to them, but the one who buys him food, buys him clothes, gives him dotage, he ‘sees his face'” . It’s the relaxed energy, he insists, that’s paramount for the nervous and traumatized adoptive dog to gain confidence.
“What you have to do is not exalt him too much but give him peace of mind, let him enter your environment, give him his space until he gradually adapts.” The walk is also essential. “They love to walk. There a bond of trust and respect is created and the rest comes in addition.
But trainers won’t do everything for you. Come prepared to exercise. “It is also important that everyone who takes their dogs to this place walks with them, so that when they are in the meeting, seeing and hearing other animals, they are more relaxed.” The dog park will allow them to exercise.
The entrance to all the activities is free, continues De Weber, as well as the majority of the services of the brigades; some activities may have a minimal cost. “It is safe entertainment, protected both by our private security and by the National Tourism Police and metropolitan police.
