This is the ludicrous information of the day: a documentary film shot entirely within GTA Online will benefit from a release in cinemas and on a streaming platform.
A “GTA movie” in streaming and in theaters
The film Grand Theft Hamlet, shot entirely in the online mode of Grand Theft Auto Vwill be released in cinemas, as well as broadcast on a streaming platform.
It was the distributor Mubi, which also owns its eponymous streaming platform, which announced the news on X/Twitter. The release date for Grand Theft Hamlet has not yet been revealed. Theatrical exhibition only concerns American cinemas. Mubi will host the film in its catalog and should make it available worldwide.

A fascinating project
Directed and written by Pinny Grills and Sam Crane, Grand Theft Hamlet features two actors, Sam Crane and Mark Oosterveen, who are champing at the bit during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom, while all theaters are closed during the confinement. The two friends then start playing GTA 5 together and decide to stage a performance of Hamlet within the game itself. Described as “extremely funny and surprisingly moving”, Grand Theft Hamlet has toured festivals, including SXSW in the United States during which it won the award for best documentary. A fascinating production that deals with art, creativity and life with a tone that oscillates between absurdist humor and drama. A film to discover soon on Mubi.
