GS Caltex, professional volleyball cup finals first… 2nd consecutive defeat, 6th championship challenge

GS Caltex reached the finals of the 2023 Gumi Dodram Cup Professional Volleyball Competition (hereafter referred to as the cup competition).
GS Caltex defeated Hyundai E&C with a set score of 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-20) in the semi-finals of the cup competition held at Park Chung-hee Gymnasium in Gumi, Gyeongsangbuk-do on the 4th.
GS Caltex, which passed the preliminaries by finishing second in Group B (2 wins and 1 loss), defeated Hyundai E&C, who ranked first in Group A (3 wins), and gained a chance to challenge for a second consecutive victory in the cup competition following last year’s Suncheon Championship.
GS Caltex is also the team with the most wins (5 times) in the women’s cup competition. The second place in this category is Hyundai E&C, which has won four times.
From the second half of the second set, GS Caltex led the game.
GS Caltex, which gave the first set unfortunately, was dragged 18-21 in the second set as well.
However, Kwon Min-ji’s time-lag attack made up for one point, and Hyundai Engineering & Construction Ji-yoon Jeong’s attack room narrowed the gap further.
Jung Ji-yoon’s quick open went out of line again, and GS Caltex tied the score 21-21.
GS Caltex then turned Hyundai E&C’s middle blocker Yang Hyo-jin’s central attack into defense, and ace Kang So-hui’s open attack succeeded in reversing 22-21.
With Yoo Seo-yeon’s sub ace coming out, GS Caltex ran away with 23-21.
Sohui Kang made a set point with a quick open at 23-22, and ended the set with a quick open at 24-23 as well.
In the 3rd set, Kang So-hui’s firepower shone.
In 11-11, Kang So-hui broke the balance with an open attack, and added to the score by blocking Kim Joo-hyang’s open attack.
Afterwards, Ji-yoon Moon shook the receive line of Hyundai E&C with a strong serve, and So-hui Kang finished it with an attack, which was repeated twice.
With Kang So-Hui and Oh Se-Yeon’s blocking points and Mun Ji-Yoon’s sub ace, GS Caltex ran away 18-11, consolidating their winning streak.
In the fourth set, GS Caltex took the lead by scoring three times in a row, 13-13, with Kang So-Hui blocking, Hwang Yeon-Joo’s Beom-Sil, and Yoo Seo-Yeon’s quick open, and finished the game while maintaining the lead.
Kang So-hui scored 23 points, the most for both teams that day.
Choi Eun-ji suffered a broken right ankle injury at the beginning of the second set and left, but wing strikers Yoo Seo-yeon (14 points) and Mun Ji-yoon (14 points) helped Kang So-hui.
Hyundai E&C failed to find a breakthrough by failing to take advantage of its height and losing 4-11 to GS Caltex in the blocking score.
Hyundai E&C, which lost to GS Caltex in the semi-finals of the Suncheon Cup last year, failed to advance to the final in Gumi this year as well, being blocked by GS Caltex.
