Grupo City: Girona, Troyes, and Montevideo Torque – From Relegation to Sensation in Spain, France, and Uruguay

Three of its projects (Girona, Troyes and Montevideo Torque) underwent relegation to the second division after being taken over by Grupo City.

From relegated to Spain’s ‘sensation’

Tied on points with Real Madrid at the top of the Spanish league table, Girona needed to take “a step” back before becoming one of the best new additions in European football this season.

The modest Catalan team was purchased by Grupo City, in partnership with businessman Pere Guardiola, brother of coach Pep Guardiola, in 2017, as soon as it managed to ascend to La Liga for the first time in history.

However, their stay in the elite only lasted two seasons. Then, it took another three years in second place for Girona to return to the elite. In 2022/23, upon returning to the first division, the team was placed tenth. Now, with his house in better order, he is ahead of even Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid in the standings.

France and Uruguay

Troyes, a team from the City Group in France, is now going through the same process that Girona went through back then. The team was acquired by the conglomerate in 2020, achieved promotion to the elite in the first year under new management, but ended up relegated last season.
