The invention, called ‘DentalSlim Diet Control’, is applied to a patient’s upper and lower teeth. Because of the clamps, the wearer can no longer open his mouth and you can only consume liquid food. Just grabbing a bag of chips or reaching for the cookie jar is no longer possible.

But as impressive as the waste promises sound (according to the press release, research participants lost 6.3 kilos in two weeks), the device is causing a lot of fuss on social media. “This is torture,” says one. “You don’t need this torture device to go on a liquid diet,” says the other.

Creepy clamps remain

After the criticism, the university felt compelled to provide more explanation: ,,To clarify: the device is not intended as an aid for rapid or long-term weight loss. Rather, it is intended to help people who need surgery but can’t, until they’ve lost weight.”

Despite the fuss, the researchers are still going ahead with the creepy jaw clamps. The university wants to find a commercial partner so that they can conduct research into the effect with more patients.
