Growing Stevia in Lowlands: Successful Cultivation at 25 Meters Above Sea Level

Trubus.id— Stevia in the lowlands, can it grow? Police Commissioner. Fadli Amri, proved that stevia can be cultivated in Legok District, Tangerang Regency, Banten Province, at an altitude of 25 meters above sea level (asl).

“Stevia is actually a plant in the highlands, we tried to adapt it to the lowlands and it was successful,” he said. Fadli processes the cultivated leaves into a liquid extract, the result is that the sweetness level is still many times higher than sucrose.

According to practitioners and stevia growers in Lembang District, West Bandung Regency, West Java Province, Ir. Thio Setiowekti, stevia is adaptive and can be cultivated even in the lowlands. However, the sweetness level is most optimal in the highlands.

However, stevia actually has the potential to be sweeter than other sweetener-producing plants such as sugar cane. For example, if it is cultivated in the highlands, the level of sweetness can be 500 times higher than that of sucrose.

Meanwhile, in the lower plains, on average, it is 70-300 times sweeter than sucrose. The most important thing is to water regularly to maintain field capacity.

This means it is not flooded and the soil is not dry. Please understand that the part of the plant that is harvested is the leaves which have the highest level of sweetness compared to other parts of the plant.
