Growing Displacement Crisis and Tension in Lebanon: The Case of Rmeish

“Lebanon Debate”

Although the security event represented by the war has overshadowed other headlines on the internal scene, the issue of Syrian displacement has not completely disappeared from the forefront, especially in light of the continued infiltration and entry operations through illegal crossings into Lebanon, the most recent of which was the army’s thwarting of the entry of 1,500 people. Syria illegally yesterday.

However, this aspect of the growing displacement crisis is not the only one, in light of what was recorded as of last Monday of attempts to enter, by force and under the guise of Israeli bombing of some border villages, of entry operations into the town of Rmeish by Syrians from neighboring villages, despite The danger of Israeli shells and missiles, in a reverse “exodus” process towards unsafe areas, noting that the Syrians originally came to Lebanon and the south to escape the war!

After the recent incidents that occurred in several areas following friction between Lebanese and Syrians, tension moved to the border town of Rmeish, where more than 500 displaced Syrians tried to enter the town by force.

“Lebanon Debate” asked the mayor of Rmeish, Milad Al-Alam, who explained that “under the pretext of fleeing from danger and the missile and artillery shelling that targeted the town of Aita Al-Shaab, a large number of Syrians arrived in Rmeish during the night, exceeding 500 people, and they are from families that came to settle.” There, after some families had fled the town to Beirut due to fear of Israeli bombing.”

The mayor of Rmeish revealed, “It is clear that these Syrians have gone to Rmeish in order to enter homes or empty places in the town to stay there, knowing that about 500 Syrians have been present in Rmeish for years, and the people have previously complained about them, due to acts of theft and friction.” And the problems they caused during this period.”

Al-Alam added, “It appears that the Syrians residing in the town have informed the displaced people in all the neighboring villages that the town’s people have left it and that they can enter it without any supervision during the night, noting that some young Syrians have succeeded in entering secretly and bypassing the procedures taken by the municipality.” “And they stayed with Syrian families in the town.”

In this context, Al-Alam spoke about the fact that “the municipality had monitored the location of these people and worked to remove them from the town, which was being bombed at that time,” explaining that about a thousand Syrians had tried on Monday-Tuesday night to enter the town, but the municipality, with the help of the people, confronted them. Due to the inability to accommodate this large number, the Syrians did nothing but throw stones at the people, launch various kinds of insults, and provoke the people, who asked them to go to safe areas that would not be bombed.

Al-Alam confirmed that “the people of Rmeish are not racist, but they reject the ‘occupation’ of their town by the Syrians, knowing that they previously opened their doors and homes to the people of neighboring villages, but they do not want to shelter the Syrians who ‘ate the egg and peeled it.'”
