A group of vulnerable patients may benefit from a third or fourth shot against the coronavirus. Several doctors report this to the General Newspaper.
It concerns people with a weak immune system, for example because of a disease such as leukemia or because they take medication because of a transplant to shut down the immune system. “It is not happening on a large scale, but we have seen people on our corona unit who got sick despite vaccination. And these are all people with an underlying immune disorder,” infectious disease specialist Bram Goorhuis said in a statement NOS Radio 1 News know. Hospitals are currently investigating how well this group of vulnerable people respond to current vaccinations and whether they need at least an extra shot.
According to Goorhuis, it is expected that a number of patients will respond insufficiently to the two injections. “We hope that with an extra vaccine, or maybe two, we will still be able to protect these people well.” According to the infectiologist, there is reason for optimism because it has previously been shown that people who have received a new immune system after a stem cell transplant. “They are also given multiple vaccines against certain diseases, and we see that it works well.”
