The A7 between Sneek and Joure appears to have been driven by groundwater, according to Rijkswaterstaat. The highway has been closed in both directions since Wednesday, because a kind of threshold was created in the asphalt.

Part of the tunnel depression, a so-called tunnel section, has risen due to groundwater pressure, he writes Omrop Fryslan. The anchors that were supposed to hold the tunnel section in place were probably broken.

Rijkswaterstaat will check all ground anchors and repair the damage. It will probably take several months.

No damage detected before

To ensure that the tarmac and tunnel section do not rise further, 1700 large sandbags were placed to provide back pressure.

Regular inspections of the Rijkswaterstaat have previously revealed no damage to the anchors or sections of the tunnel.

It concerns the part of the road under the Princess Margriet canal aqueduct at Uitwellingerga. In the near future, traffic will have to divert onto local and provincial roads.

“People have to get used to it. It will still cause problems in the near future,” Rijkswaterstaat said yesterday.
