Groundbreaking Study Reveals New Hope for Patients with Weak Immune Systems: Published in the New England Journal of Medicine

We look forward to developing new treatments for these patients and improving the cure rate. This study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, a top international journal, which is an affirmation of medical research.

[Healthcare Network/Reporter Zhang Ci’en]Associate Professor Zheng Wanxi, who was sent to the National Institutes of Health in the United States for further study by National Taiwan University Hospital, discovered a new factor during his further study, which can explain why some people’s immune function is relatively weak, and after returning to Taiwan and The National Taiwan University Hospital research team continues to cooperate with the United States to complete this study. Studies have found that when the body produces a special type of autoantibody, it inhibits the body’s natural defense mechanism against germs, thereby increasing the risk of rare and serious infections. This discovery is expected to help such patients obtain early diagnosis and treatment.

This outstanding study revealed that some patients develop autoantibodies against a protein called interleukin-23. Under normal circumstances, interleukin-23 helps immune cells fight invading pathogens such as bacteria, fungi, and mycobacteria. However, once the body produces autoantibodies that neutralize this protein, the body loses its defense against these pathogens.

The study also found that a quarter of a group of patients with thymic tumors and other rare infections had the autoantibodies. These patients are often infected with fungi, mycobacteria or other rare pathogens, and develop severe symptoms such as widespread infection and nervous system infection.

In the past, the medical community has always believed that some patients have low immunity due to their “physical constitution” or due to surgery, chemotherapy, etc., which leads to subsequent rare or serious infections. Now through research, it has been found that one of the causes of these physical conditions is probably related to this special autoimmune disease. If this autoimmune phenomenon can be diagnosed early, we can provide appropriate treatment in time and improve the patient’s prognosis.

This discovery helps the medical community find an important additional piece of the puzzle to understand the complex causes of acquired immune deficiencies. We look forward to developing new treatments for these patients and improving the cure rate. This study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, a top international journal, which is an affirmation of medical research.
